Self Care Rituals
for Inner Peace

To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. – Buddha

In honouring the wisdom of Buddha, it's clear how important it is to weave self care rituals into our daily lives.

I must confess, I am not the best person to give advice on this subject. I have a habit of putting myself last, often prioritising the washing up over my own well being, much to my own detriment. Writing this has reminded me how much I still have to learn.

To guide me in this post, I turned to my partner, who is quite the expert in self care. He has a wonderful way of taking his time, never allowing himself to be rushed by anyone or anything. Is this annoying AF? Yes. Is it productive and can I learn from him? Also yes.

The Importance of Self Care

Is self care a hot bath with no children banging on the door, shouting “mum I need a wee”? (picture my eyes rolling down the road at this point). In my world at least, no definitely not.

I think of self care as taking deliberate steps to nurture your mental, emotional, and physical health. It’s recognising your own worth and understanding that you deserve to spend time and effort on your well being. When you make self care a priority, you cultivate an inner peace that flows into every aspect of your life.

Creating Your Self Care Rituals

Establishing self care rituals can truly transform your day-to-day life. These rituals need to be your own, as there's no one size fits all approach.

When I spoke to my partner, he suggested starting the day with mindfulness meditation, focusing on your breath and grounding yourself in the present. This, he said, helps set a calm and peaceful tone for the day ahead.

He also advised me to go for regular walks in nature, whether it be walking or cycling. The fresh air and natural beauty do wonders for the soul, helping to rejuvenate both mind and body.

Another piece of advice he offered, which I already practice, is journaling. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be incredibly therapeutic, helping you to process emotions and reflect on your experiences.

I often find that when I’m angry, writing it down takes it off my chest. A few hours, or even a day later (who am I kidding, a week later), I can revisit what I’ve written and often find myself laughing, thinking, “Was I really upset about that little thing?”

Integrating Self Care into Your Daily Life

Incorporating self care into your daily routine doesn’t have to be complicated.

Start by saying no more often. This sounds easy to do, as my partner has no problem with this word, but for some reason I feel like a failure when I have to say no to family or friends. I have this inbuilt “yes” switch.

The mental switch my partner taught me was, every no, is a yes for yourself. No, I can't stay late at work because I have a previous engagement. Work doesn’t have to know that engagement is a hot bath without the kids.

Identify activities that bring you joy and peace. Then, make a commitment to include these activities in your day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. An old friend of mine makes appointments with herself, because she never misses an appointment.

The key is consistency, and by regularly practising self care, you reinforce the message to yourself that your well being is important. Over time, these small acts of self love build up, creating a significant impact on your inner peace.
